Gunman Apprehended in Shootout With Police, 1 Woman Killed, Booby-Trapped Bombs At Scene (PICTURES)

The Denver Police Department's bomb squad is working to disable a number of homemade incendiary devices set by a man who allegedly shot two women, killing one, before getting in a shootout with police, according to KUSA-TV.

Denver Police report that the shooter called police and informed them that he wanted to have a shootout. When police arrived on the scene they found that the gunman had set up incendiary devices in the middle of West Evans Avenue and was holding a rifle, according to KUSA-TV.

Denver Police Chief Robert White told ABC News that the shooter was shot in the chest after he was able to set off one of the incendiary devices with his rifle.

"Officers responded to the scene and approached what they thought was a possible suspect. As they were approaching, the suspect fired one shot at a makeshift incendiary device, which was activated," White said. "His intent was to harm someone."

Shortly after the device was exploded an officer was heard on the police radio saying that he was going to take a shot, according to ABC News.

"Party's down. Party's down. Moving up, we're moving up. Took one shot," the officer said. The suspected shooter was critically injured when he was shot and had to undergo emergency surgery at the hospital, according to CBS Denver.

"There are several potential incendiary devices in the area," White said. "We evacuated the area to make sure no one was in harm's way and the bomb squad is actively trying to mitigate those devices."

As of now police are not sure what the relationship was between the two women the gunman shot and the gunman, if there was one. Police are also unsure of why exactly the gunman decided to challenge the police to a shootout, according to CBS Denver.
