Life is tough in the zombie apocalypse. Despite repeated setbacks, grave losses and general anguish, the suffering for the gang in "The Walking Dead" is far from over. When last we saw Rick Grimes and his merry band of zombie slayers, things were not going well. A walker horde had overrun Alexandria, and the survivors were scattered to the wind. Negan and his Saviors are on the horizon, and more bloodshed is imminent. Yet, according to producer Greg Nicotero, it's going to get a whole lot worse from here.

"It's a tremendously exciting juncture that we've come into play on The Walking Dead which is this crossroads, and that our story's about to take a dramatic turn," he said in a new featurette released by AMC.

Based on Nicotero's comments, it sounds like "The Walking Dead" may be expanding their horizons and potentially getting even darker than previous seasons. The first half of season six had a more hopeful tone to it, as Rick and Co. were beginning to get Alexandria into shape. However, good things never last in "The Walking Dead."

New characters will be arriving soon, and it's doubtful that they will all get along. We've already been given a few glimpses of the Wolves and Saviors, and next will probably come the Hilltop Colony led by Xander Berkeley's character. Given all the players present, it wouldn't be too crazy to expect a full blown war to erupt.

Danai Gurira, who plays Michonne, also discussed how the show will cover new ground.

"They always have found ways to move forward and this is a whole new experience that they're stepping into in the second half of the season," Gurira said.

Human threats have always been at the center of "The Walking Dead," from the Governor and Woodbury to the cannibals of Terminus. Though the Walkers may control the earth, it is other people that are the true danger. That will only get worse with the introduction of all these new factions.

"The Walking Dead" will return to AMC on Feb. 14.
