Bruce Springsteen stopped by "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" Thursday night to talk about his upcoming "The River Tour" and also reminisced about his legendary career.

Springsteen and the E Street Band are making their long-awaited return to music this weekend on the Tina Fey and Amy Poehler-hosted episode of "Saturday Night Live," but the E Street band was not the first band Springsteen was involved in. The musician talked about his first group Steel Mill with Fallon and how his sound evolved over time.

"We had a very heavy blues band. I was about 19," Springsteen said of his early band, which eventually evolved into the E Street Band, according to Rolling Stone. "I played very heavy music for a long time before I moved into more soul-influenced rock, but I wouldn't mind having that hair back."

Fallon then showed a picture of a young Springsteen who sported some very long hair.

The two also talked about the singer's breakthrough album "The River" and revealed that one of the most popular songs off of it, "Hungry Heart," was actually written for a different band.

"I saw the Ramones in Asbury Park and we were talking for a while and I was like, 'Man I've got to write the Ramones a song,'" he told Fallon. "So I went home and I sat at my table and I wrote it in about the time it took me to sing it. I brought it in and we went to make a demo for it or I played it for [Johnny Ramone], and he said, 'Nah, you better keep that one.' He was right about that. It did pretty well."

"Hungry Heart" was the first song of Springsteen's to break the Billboard top 10 and peaked at No. 5, according to Entertainment Weekly.
