DJI Phantom, the company famous for building one of the world's best quadcopter drones available to average consumers today, has just unveiled a $650 device that some are touting as the ultimate selfie stick.

Dubbed as the Osmo, the stick promises cinema-quality stabilization, with its three-axis gimbal technology, and 4K video capability on a built-in camera mounted in a 6.5-inch handle. It is quite different from the conventional selfie stick in the sense that the handle is not an expandable baton.

The hefty price tag, however, could turn some consumers off even with special features such as an automatic panorama activated by a tap, noted TIME. It is important to note, however, that the price includes the advanced camera with its advanced stabilization technology. Consumers can still purchase the Osmo without it for less, but it would defeat the very purpose of the device, unless consumers already own DJI's Zenmuse cameras. Smartphones, such as the iPhone, are also compatible.

The video below shows how the Osmo selfie stick works, as well as the quality of its camera. A control pad that can be operated by the user's thumb will shoot photos and videos. It also includes a trackpad that is used to manipulate the orientation of the mounted camera.

The value proposition of the Osmo relies on the technology that powers the camera, as well as the selfie stick that holds it. It embodies the robotic technology found in the DJI's Phantom drones, according to The Verge. Here, it is clear that the stick becomes an alternative in capturing photos or videos where a human can move easier than a drone, noted Popular Science.
