Adam Jones: Fan Throws Banana Peel at Orioles Center Fielder; All Star Vents on Twitter

Baltimore Orioles center fielder Adam Jones said he was the victim of a racially-insensitive act during the Orioles’ Sunday matchup at the San Francisco Giants.

Jones sent out this tweet following the Orioles' 10-2 victory, outlining and criticizing the alleged act:

“I want to thank whatever slap---- threw that banana towards my direction in CF in the last inning. Way to show ur class u jack---.”

According to later tweets from Jones’ some people who saw the tweet were trying to validate the deed.

Jones also tweeted:

Throwing a banana peel at an African-American athlete like Jones—or any African-American at all—is viewed as a racially-offensive action. Incidents such as the one Jones is alleging, have been seen during sporting events European soccer games and in the NHL, according to ESPN.com.

They have shrunk in frequency in matches that take place in Western Europe. One of the more famous incidents came during a soccer match in Russia where Roberto Carlos of the Brazilian national team was the victim of such an act.

The NHL witnessed such an act in 2011 when Philadelphia Flyers right winger Wayne Simmons had a banana peel hurled in his direction.

Currently there is no video showing a fan throwing the banana peel. In addition, the Baltimore Sun reports Giants’ senior director of media relations, Jim Moorehead, said he hasn’t gotten any notifications of an item being hurled onto the field.

However, if this is true, the Giants will most likely make a statement and take some sort of action to rectify the situation.
