Tired of data-heavy devices like the iPhone or the Samsung Galaxy S6? Do you wish to return to the days of a phone that only has one function - making calls? You may like the Light Phone.
The Light Phone is just that - a phone. The device is credit card-sized, has a 20 day-long battery life, and only has one function - making calls. All the user has to do is insert a SIM card into the device, input the number you want to call, and voila! The Light Phone is working.
The Light Phone's designer originally designed the phone during Google's New York City-based 30 Weeks incubator. Light Phone co-designer Joe Hollier said that the phone was designed to help users try and be present in their life. "We started building this because it became very clear that true happiness means being present," Hollier told TechCrunch. "This has been written about by so many of the smartest minds since Seneca. So much of our days are spent connected and staring at screens that we are losing that presence in so many situations. We built the Light Phone as a way for people to find balance with their connectedness. It's not that we think people should never connect again, it's just that taking a break is extremely healthy in every sense of the word."
The goal of the Light Phone is not to break the user's connection to the world, but to use the phone as little as possible.
Hollier and his co-designer Kaiwei Tang are trying to raise $200,000 for the Light Phone on Kickstarter. Customers can preorder a Light Phone for $100. The phone comes with 500 pre-paid talk time and a USB charger. Hollier and Tang hope to deliver the finished Light Phone by May 2016.
