More upsetting news from Sam Smith! The "Stay With Me" singer announced to his fans that he will have to undergo vocal cord surgery next week - which means more cancelled shows.

Over the past month, Smith has cancelled shows in Japan, the Philippines, France and Monaco because of his vocal cord issues. The 22-year-old singer told ABC that his doctor advised him to undergo "suspension micro laryngoscopy surgery."

After surgery, Smith will need six to eight weeks to make a full recovery and get back on the road.

Smith broke the sad news in an Instagram post, which read, "Dear all, I am very upset to announce I have been battling to get my vocal cords better that last 10 days but unfortunately they haven't recovered and I am going to need surgery. I am so gutted to be missing all the shows and events I was meant to be playing at. The doctors say I'll be back in 6-8 weeks and I cannot wait to sing for you all soon."

He captioned the post, "Bad news. I have my operation booked for next week, so getting really nervous. But by doing this in 8 weeks time I'm gonna be able to sing like never before so it's worth it. I am so sorry to all. Dreading the next month thou, I can't speak for THREE WEEKS after the op."

Earlier this week, Smith announced that his shows scheduled for May 7 and May 8 in Japan and May 10 in the Philippines would have to be rescheduled due to complications with his vocal chords.

"Very upset about Japan and Manilla dates," he captioned an Instagram picture that shows the singer sitting with his back facing the sea. "I've just left Australia and I'm on my way to the states to see a specialist to see what to do from there... This is f------g horrid."
