A woman died on a roller coaster at Six Flags Over Texas on Friday. Witnesses say that the woman fell off of the Texas Giant roller coaster but officials have not confirmed how the woman died, only that she died while riding the coaster, according to the Associated Press.
The Texas Giant, which claims to be the tallest steel-hybrid coaster in the world, was closed following the accident. A statement was released by the theme park expressing sympathy for the victim but offering no explanation as to what caused the death.
"We are deeply saddened to share that earlier this evening an adult woman died in the park while on the Texas Giant. Park medical staff and local paramedics responded immediately. Since the safety of our guests and employees is our number one priority, that section of the park has been temporarily closed. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends during this difficult time."
Carmen Brown was waiting in line for the ride at the time of the accident.
"She goes up like this," Brown told CNN. "Then when it drops to come down, that's when it (the safety bar) released and she just tumbled."
Brown also saw the woman when she got onto the coaster and says that she wasn't properly fastened.
"They didn't secure her right," Brown said. "One of the employees from the park - one of the ladies - she asked her to click her more than once, and they were like, 'As long as you heard it click, you're OK.' Everybody else is like, 'click, click, click.' Hers only clicked once. Hers was the only one that went down once, and she didn't feel safe, but they let her still get on the ride."
Gabe Flores was also in line waiting to board the coaster and he told CNN about when the coaster came back to the start without the woman on it.
"Me and my girlfriend were at the gates and the next one to get on the ride...the cars came in and there was a man and a woman in the front," Flores said. "The man was saying, 'let me out, let me out, my mom fell off. There's a turn that's pretty steep, and the person behind her empty seat said she fell out there - just flew out."
The Texas Giant was built in 1990 as a wooden roller coaster but was transformed in 2011 when it was given a steel track. The coaster rises up to a height of 153 feet and its largest drop is 147 feet, according to CNN.
