Don't be fooled by the Washington Redskins' announcement last month that quarterback Robert Griffin III is the team's starter next season. That move wasn't an answer, just a precursor to more questions. Nothing is settled as of right now and it's more than possible that another name will be thrown into the QB mix in D.C.

That name is Marcus Mariota.

The Redskins will reportedly select the Heisman Trophy winner if he falls to them with the fifth overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

"And honestly, don't discount, he's not going to fall to the Jets at six right now, the Redskins will take him at five," ESPN's John Clayton said via 247Sports. "At least Dan Snyder might not think there's quarterback issues, Jay Gruden and everyone else in the front office thinks there's quarterback issues.

"And if Marcus Mariota falls to five, it's not a position where they're desperate enough to trade up to get him, but if he falls to five, I'm telling you this right now, they'll take him."

Those are strong words from a very reliable and professional source. But does this move make sense for the Redskins?

If Clayton's intel is accurate, it could mean that new general manager Scot McCloughan has done his research and came to the conclusion that RGIII is not franchise-QB material. If that's the case, investing in the position early in his tenure seems more understandable.

On the other hand, Washington could be leaking misinformation to convey the message to Griffin that nothing is guaranteed. No better way to light a fire under someone than to make them believe their job is in serious danger.

Finally, this could all be a smokescreen to rope a team into trading up with them. With so many holes on the roster, trading back and acquiring more picks may be the best way for the Redskins to go.

Which scenario is the most likely? No one ever knows with Washington. They march to the beat of their own drum for better and for worse, though it's mostly worse. We'll just have to wait and see how this situation plays out.
