Message in a Bottle Found in Sandy Debris: 12-Year-Old Note Returned to Dead Girl's Mother

Twelve years ago, a little girl named Sidonie placed a message in a ginger-ale bottle and let it float off the coast of Long Island, NY.

Found amidst Superstorm Sandy debris, Sidione's message has been passed along to her grieving mother, Mimi Fery.

Sidonie died when she fell off a cliff at a Swiss boarding school in 2010, according to the New York Daily News. The note contained Fery's phone number, making for an easy return.

"I was just sobbing when I heard they had found it,"Fery told the Daily News. "These are very, very kind people."

A special ceremony will be held this weekend to honor Sidonie, who Fery described as a "creative youngster," always writing poetry.

"Fery will return to the seaside village about 60 miles east of Manhattan where she will again thank the workers and attend a ceremony where a small plaque will be dedicated as a remembrance to Sidonie," village officials said.

According to the Daily News, Fery instantly knew the message in the bottle was written by Sidonie because it was a quote from "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure," her favorite childhood favorite film.

"Be excellent to yourself, dude," Fery said, quoting the message. "It makes so much sense."

Sidonie was born on Sept. 11, 1991, and was teased and harassed after the terror attacks on her 10th birthday because of her Persian heritage, according to the Daily News.

"She had to deal with a lot of things," Fery said. "But she stood her ground."

Brian Waldron, a Patchogue parks department employee for 23 years, said a temporary worker hired to assist with the cleanup after Sandy found the bottle.

"We opened it and it had a phone number inside, so I called the number and left a message," Waldron told the Daily News.

Fery called back crying and the two arranged a meeting to pick up the note. Waldron also collected a second bottle to filled it up with sand from the area the message was found.

"I told her I felt like her daughter was looking down from heaven and wanted me to give her a call," Waldron said. "She was crying, everybody was crying."
