N.C. Deck Collapses: 21 Sent to the Hospital For Injuries Including an Infant After Wood Buckles Them Onto Concrete Patio Below (PHOTOS/VIDEO)

Twenty-one people vacationing at a rental beach house in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C. were injured when a second story condominium deck overlooking the Atlantic ocean collapsed onto a concrete patio below, the Huffington Post reports.

Officials in Brunswick County told HuffPost that the deck collapsed at around 8:15 p.m. yesterday with about 25 people on it. Emergency services director Anthony Marzano said that those injured suffered from cuts and broken bones, but luckily none of the injuries were life-threatening. An infant and and an elderly person were among those harmed in the collapse.

Thirteen people were taken to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and seven were taken to Brunswick Novant Medical Center in Supply and one was flown to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, about 40 miles from the scene of the accident. Amy Myers from Brunswick Novant Medical Center told WECTV that five of the victims taken to that hospital have been treated and released, while two others remain in the hospital.

One man involved in the incident said he saw another man come out of the hospital with a cast on his leg, appearing distraught and in a lot of pain from the accident.

According to WECTV, one of the people staying at the house said that everyone had gone out on the deck when the wood buckled beneath them onto a first floor concrete patio.

"I've actually had a long-standing opinion of this situation," Ocean Isle Beach Mayor Debbie Smith told WECTV, "these oceanfront decks need to be held to a higher standard than North Carolina laws require."

State laws say that there is no need for property inspections unless there is a complaint made or additional construction going on. The home where the deck collapsed was last inspected in 2003 when construction of the property was completed. Smith explained that state municipalities are not allowed to enforce laws stricter than those of the state.
