Australian Radio DJ Mel Greig, one of the on-air personalities behind a prank call to Kate Middleton's hospital room that allegedly led to one of her nurse's committing suicide, is now suing her employer.
According to Greig's lawyer, Steven Lewis, the suit was filed with Fair Work Australia and accuses radio station owner Southern Cross Austereo of failing to maintain a safe workplace.
The prank call occurred in December 2012 when Greig and co-host Michael Christian phoned King Edward VII Hospital in London pretending to be Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles. The two successfully received a health update on Kate Middleton, who was admitted for acute morning sickness at the beginning of her pregnancy.
Three days after the prank, Jacintha Saldanha, the nurse who passed on the call to Middleton's room, hanged herself. The incident led to Greig and Christian being pulled from the air.
"There's not a minute that goes by where we don't think about her family and what they must be going through," Greig told a local Australian TV show at the time. "The thought that we may have played a part in that is gut-wrenching."
Greig is still employed at Southern Cross Austereo, but has not returned to air since the tragic prank. Christian, on the other hand, returned several months later to another station under the same ownership, and has since received an award from the company as "Australia's Next Top Jock," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
THR also reported that Southern Cross Austereo is currently under investigation by the Australian Communications and Media Authority to see if the station violated license conditions by airing the prank call.
According to Greig's lawyer, details of her suit will remain confidential under the Fair Work Act. Greig, who has reportedly been seeking counseling following the ordeal, did not comment on the legal action.
