The powerful late-night explosion in the city of Indianapolis that killed at least one person and left many other injured has completely destroyed one home and set a dozen other homes ablaze in the neighborhood.
The explosion took place at around 11 p.m. in the Richmond Hills subdivision. Although the exact cause of the explosion is not known yet, it is speculated that the blast could have resulted from a natural gas explosion.
"Two homes exploded late Saturday, sparking fires in at least two others and damaging upwards of a dozen homes in total", said Lt. Bonnie Hensley, a spokeswoman for the Indianapolis Fire Department was quoted in the Chicago Tribune. She said the area looked like a war zone and another spokeswoman for the Fire Department told the Tribune that the explosion happened near the intersection of South Stop 11 Road and South Sherman Drive.
Residents have been evacuated to a nearby elementary school after the powerful blast that could be heard for miles all around the south Indianapolis neighbourhood. According to the Indianapolis Fire Department officials, firefighters immediately began the work of containing the house fires and finally contained the flames early Sunday.
