The New York Jets were the first team to officially make a move on Black Monday. Mazel Tov on that consummation, New York. The Jets began the day by firing head coach Rex Ryan and general manager John Idzik. Ryan reportedly appreciated the quick decisions from owner Woody Johnson, as the former head coach doesn't want to be unemployed for long.
According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, Ryan wants to get back in the game as soon as possible.
"Rex believes he has a chance at another head coaching job in coming weeks," Mehta tweeted. "Rex Ryan wants to explore NFL head coach opportunities. If he doesn't land HC job, I'm told he believes his next destination will be ESPN."
Ryan reportedly does not have any interest in a defensive coordinator position after spending 15 years as an NFL assistant. Mehta reports that Ryan would be fine working in television until another head coaching position opens up.
The Atlanta Falcons and San Francisco 49ers both officially parted ways with their head coaches today. The Oakland Raiders, Chicago Bears and possibly other teams are expected to follow. Despite New York's struggles - the Jets have not made the postseason in four years - Ryan is beloved by his players and known to successfully command a locker room. It's not out of the question for Ryan to receive a quick offer from a team looking to make a splashy hire.
