Researchers suggest that exercising before breakfast helps burn fats faster and makes losing weight easier and more effective.
According to recent reports from a new study conducted by researchers at Glasgow University, exercising before breakfast is very effective in burning fat quicker and helps lose those extra pounds quicker. The study was conducted on 10 men. On the first day they didn't exercise at all. On the second day they were asked to take a quick walk before breakfast and on the third day they exercised after breakfast.
The obvious finding was that on the days that the men exercised they lost more fat than when they just sat around. The study also found that on the days the men exercised before having their breakfast, they lost 33 percent more fat than when they exercised after having their breakfast.
"When people talk about losing weight, they really mean losing fat," said Dr Jason Gill, who conducted the research at Glasgow University. "Any exercise you do is beneficial, but the indications are that there might be an extra benefit associated with exercising before eating, compared to after."
Gill was quick to add that exercise after breakfast is better than no exercise at all. So people who cannot exercise before breakfast shouldn't give up on exercising altogether.
"The biggest difference is between doing nothing and doing something," Dr. Gill was quoted as saying by Mail Online. "If you are going to do something, then there is a slight advantage in doing it in a fasted state. But if you find you keel over because you can't do exercise before you have your slice of toast, then do it afterwards. You are still going to get a huge benefit."
Either way, weight loss is still likely be a slow process. In the experiment, those who exercised before breakfast were found to lose only about a tenth of a pound more fat than those who did not.
"If they did an hour's brisk walk every day for ten days or so, they would lose about a pound, which is about as fast as you can really expect to lose weight," Dr. Gill said.
