Seattle Woman Rapes Sleeping Man After Breaking Into His Home, Police Say

A Seattle woman has been charged with raping a man while he was sleeping after breaking into his home last year.

Chantae M. Gilman, 26, is accused of breaking into her neighbor's West Seattle apartment in the dead of night and sexually assaulting him as he slept on June 17, 2013, Q13 Fox reported.

DNA evidence collected from a rape kit pointed to Gilman, who reportedly has four children. She was arrested and charged Monday with second-degree rape.

The 31-year-old victim, only identified as MO, returned to his duplex the night before the alleged rape after celebrating another tenant's birthday, the Seattle Police Department told the station. He was in bed by 10 p.m. "due to a long day," police said.

At 2 a.m., the man awoke to find a 240-pound woman on top of him and engaging in sexual intercourse, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported. He told her to get off, but the woman, said to be Gilman, refused and ordered him to be quiet.

Eventually the victim "was able to work his way out from underneath" Gilman and forced her out of his home. Later that day he went to Harborview Medical Center and had staff perform a rape kit.

When questioned by police, Gilman said she did not know MO and did not remember ever having sex with him. But she did admit to knowing the other resident in the duplex. She also told investigators she suffers from bipolar disorder and psychosis, according to Q13 Fox.

The victim said he did not know Gilman but "recognized her as a drug user in the area," police said.

Police acknowledged that it's unusual to find female rapists.

"From a statistical standpoint, yes, it is atypical to have a female aggressor," SPD Detective Drew Fowler told KOMO-TV. "But we work to hold all people responsible for their actions."
