Apple announced Monday that it has sold over four million units of its new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in the first 24 hours of their availability.

The achievement serves as a new pre-order record set for the iPhone, and follows one week after the Cupertino, California-based company announced that it set a new "overnight" record, according to The Verge.

"iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are better in every way, and we are thrilled customers love them as much as we do," said Tim Cook, CEO of Apple. "Pre-orders for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus set a new record for Apple, and we can't wait to get our best iPhones yet into the hands of customers starting this Friday."

Pre-orders for the two devices started early Friday morning, with the 6 Plus selling out quickly and the iPhone 6 selling out later in the morning, TechCrunch reported.

Apple achieved twice as many pre-orders for these devices in one day than it did for the iPhone 5 in 2012, which received two million pre-orders on its first day of pre-sales. The company did not say how many pre-orders it achieved last year with the iPhone 5s and 5c in their first day, though estimates claim figures close to 2.2 million.

The tech giant said the demand for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus is greater than the initial pre-order supply, The Verge reported.

"While a significant amount will be delivered to customers beginning on Friday and throughout September, many iPhone pre-orders are scheduled to be delivered in October," Apple said.

The new iPhones will be available in Apple's retail stores starting Sept. 19 at 8 a.m. local time in the U.S., the U.K., Canada, France, Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico and Singapore, according to TechCrunch. Customers in these countries will also be able to get the devices in carrier partner stores and authorized resellers.

Apple will make the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus available to iPhone fans in other countries starting Sept. 26. These countries include Australia, Belgium, Ireland, Denmark, Italy, Finland, Isles of Man, Netherlands, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Norway, New Zealand, Portugal, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Taiwan, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.
