Buyers of the Surface RT will now receive a free keyboard cover if they purchase from May 31 to June 30-- saving up to $130.
The Surface RT, a tablet running on Windows 8, was released October 26, 2012 by Microsoft. Users who purchased the device since then had to pay around $499 and an additional $120 for the Surface Touch cover or $130 for the Type Cover. But starting today, buyers will receive the cover free when they buy the device and Microsoft that the promotion will last until June 30.
It is very important to have either a touch or type cover to pair up with the Surface RT as it protect and make the device less boring as it comes in five different colors: white, magenta, red, cyan, and black.
Customers from North America- U.S and Canada-- are lucky as the promotion has no expected end date yet so it is most likely that free covers may be given even after June 30. However, it is certain that this is a limited time promotion. Colors available are red and magenta only.
On the other hand, customers from Western Europe can avail the promo until June 30. Not all colors will be available for this region as Microsoft will only offer black, cyan, or white.
Microsoft clarifies that the promotion is not available for Surface Pro buyers and have no plans yet to do the promo.
According to Canalys Ltd., a business analyst firm, this is quite a desperate move for Microsoft as the Surface RT has not been selling pretty well. The company has only released 722,000 units to date. It wasn't able to beat Apple's iPad series which sold around 22 million of the same period. The scenario worsens for RT when Microsoft launched the Pro version which customers preferred than the other.
The free cover promo is available in Microsoft's online store and some retailers.
