A Maryland mother was arrested and charged for killing her two children, police said.
Sonya Spoon, a 24-year-old mother from Cheverly, Maryland, confessed to the police that she suffocated her children causing their death. She is currently held without bond, according to Prince George's County Police officials.
Police had found the children, Ayden and Kayla Thompson aged 1 and 3, unconscious at their Cheverly home Sunday after they responded to an emergency call around 2:13 a.m. from a house in the 6200 block of Forest Road in Prince George's County. The children were rushed to a hospital where they were pronounced dead. Investigators are yet to determine the cause of death.
"We are all saddened by this tragic event. The loss of two children that were so young tugs at our hearts. As the police investigate this horrible case, our thoughts and prayers are with the family and the people of the Cheverly community as they try to reconcile how and why this happened," said Prince George's County Executive Rushern L. Baker III, in a statement Sunday, reports WTOP.
The motive behind the crime remains unclear.
The Washington Post reports that the house where Spoon lived is occupied by Gary Spoon and his wife Paivi Spoon. The neighbors say the family has been living there for the past 20 years. The couple has two grow up children and the public records show that the arrested mother, Sonya, is aged 26. Recently, she shifted to the house with her children.
"I've seen grandbabies in passing over there," said Millicent Forbes, who has lived across the street from Gary and Paivi Spoon for two decades. "I think it must've been grandchildren."
