Facebook rolled out a major update to its Messenger app on iOS platform making it fully compatible with iPads.

The long wait is finally over. Facebook has rolled out a new update to its Messenger app on the iOS platform and Apple iPad users can now enjoy native support for the app on large screens. iPad users required third party apps or the main Facebook app for chatting with friends on mobile. The updated app supports all major features available on iPhone but has certain limitations to the new additions.

Facebook Messenger for iPad features group chats, stickers and free voice calling over Wi-Fi or cellular data. But the recent additions to Messenger, the split-screen selfie camera and the quick video recording options are still missing. The company is likely to offer them in the near feature. Apple iPad users can continue conversations on Facebook Messenger without having to depend on the main app. Also, users with both Facebook and Messenger apps installed on iPad can switch seamlessly with a single tap.

While the Messenger app has got iPad support, Facebook failed to mention any plans of rolling out a similar update for Android tablets. But the move is imminent considering the app has reached out to all platforms and is looking to expand to tablets.

In addition to iPad support, the update also allows videos shot in the Messenger to be saved on the device's camera roll. Certain bug fixes also make the app more reliable, reads the app's description.

Facebook has recently been focusing a lot on messaging. The company first mandated the standalone Messenger app for sending and receiving private messages on Facebook in May. This was one of Facebook's several moves to unbundle its core functions to separate apps and bring focus to each one of them. Earlier last month, the company updated its iOS version of the Messenger app with split-screen selfie camera and tap-and-hold video capture options.

The updated Facebook Messenger app for iPad is available for download from iTunes.
