Samsung has officially launched the first Tizen-based smartphone, the Samsung Z that will be shown at the Tizen Developer Conference this week.

The Samsung Z is the first of Samsung's new lineup running Tizen OS in the smartphone category. The company will show off the Z smartphone at this week's Tizen Developer Conference, which kicks off Tuesday, with plans to add more devices on the new Linux-based OS backed by Intel.

Samsung Z smartphone carries some of the premium features found on its flagship Galaxy S5. Besides the fast and powerful software performance, the Z smartphone is powered by a 2.3 GHz Quad-core processor, 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage with expandable options up to 64GB. The handset features new sharp cornered edges with a home button at the bottom, keeping the company's signature look intact. It has a new user interface inside the 4.8 inch Super-AMOLED Display.

The Samsung Z smartphone's UI is highly customizable, complete with easy access for favorite apps and different color themes for the display.

The Tizen OS supports 2D and 3D graphic qualities, faster boot time and multi-tasking capabilities. Like in the Galaxy S5, the Z smartphone features a built-in fingerprint scanner and Ultra Power Saving Mode to keep the phone running even at minimal battery levels. In addition, the smartphone also features heart rate monitor and download booster that combines both Wi-Fi and mobile data for faster downloads.

"Samsung is committed to enhancing the mobile experience of consumers with innovation that is both personal and unique to their needs," DJ Lee, president and head of global sales & marketing office at Samsung, said in a press release. "The Samsung Z integrates the power and adaptability of the Tizen platform, enabling users to browse the web faster and utilize applications more effectively."

Other technical details of the Z smartphone include 8-megapixel rear facing camera with different shooting modes including Mini mode, quick shot, best photo, drama, panorama, dual camera and more. The front camera is powered with 2.1 megapixels. The handset features a 2600mAh power battery and the phone weighs 136 grams.

Samsung first launched Tizen on a smartwatch, the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo in February. The smartphone running the new OS has been making the rounds as early as this year. In January, a leaked photo showed a Samsung smartphone running Tizen. The tech giant stayed mum on the subject but after launching the Samsung Z, it has confirmed further expansion of the OS across its lineup, with TVs running Tizen OS expected to be launched in 2015,Computer World reports.

As for the official Samsung Z phone, the company plans to make it available first in the Russian market during the third quarter before expanding to other markets.
