Gun shots were fired during a live television broadcast of "Le Grand Journal," a nightly news and entertainment program that broadcasts from Martinez beach every day during the Cannes Film Festival, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The French TV station Canal + was interviewing jury members Christoph Waltz and Daniel Autueil when the incident occurred. The two were immediately rushed offstage.
According to NBC News, police arrested the man at the scene and found that he was carrying a dummy grenade and a knife. Some witnesses say they heard police also say "run he has a gun."
"The bodyguards jumped over the barriers into the crowd and pulled him to the ground. The police arrived and told everyone to run because there was a grenade in his hand," witness Arthur Laiguesse told Reuters.
No one was injured during the incident and Canal +, which broadcasts the nightly news and entertainment show, ensured that everything was OK tweeting that the broadcast would be back on in a few minutes.
"It really appears to be a crazy guy," a police source told NBC.
The shooting was the second security incident on day three of the 12-day festival. The Cannes Film Festival is the world's largest cinema showcase and attracts thousands of actors, directors, film executives, journalists and fans.
Recently, $1.4 million worth of Chopard jewelry was stolen from a room at the Suite Novotel hotel on Thursday. The incident occurred just hours after the world premiere of Sofia Coppola's "The Bling Ring," based on the true story about Los Angeles teenagers robbing the homes of Hollywood stars.
