A 21-year old student at Hofstra University was fatally shot in the home she shared with her twin sister Friday, according to The New York Times.
An armed man broke into the Long Island home of 21-year old Andrea Rebello, located near the university, and held her hostage. The gunman then proceeded to exchange fire with police, according to Authorities. According to police it was not immediately clear who fired the shot that killed him.
Rebello was from Tarrytown, NY and finishing her junior year at the university. In addition to Rebello, at the time the house was shared by her twin sister Jessica, another young woman and anther young man. The suspect was wearing a ski mask and carrying a pistol when he broke in.
According to police, he held the twins and the young man hostage while allowing the other young woman to leave and retrieve money from an ATM. The young woman used that time, at 2:29 am to notify the police of the situation. Officers flocked to California Avenue in Uniondale, N.Y.
“Shortly after our arrival, a shooting took place where the suspect is killed and one of the female victims are killed,” said Nassau County Police Department Deputy Inspector Kenneth Lack.
While police are still probing into the actual details of the shooting, authorities say there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and law enforcement.
“We are doing a forensic analysis,” said Nassau Chief of Detectives John R. Capece. He added a gun was recovered at the home.
“We are going to get to the bottom of what happened,” Capece said.
