AT&T Getting Rid of the Facebook Phone, report says

The HTC First, the brand new Facebook phone, saw a lot of hype when it was first reviled in April. Now that it has been in stores for about a month, all the hype seems have to gone away and wireless carrier AT&T is acting accordingly.

The cellphone carrier is planning to stop selling the phone, according to BGR.com.

According to a “trusted source” the cellphone company’s sales of the phone have been abysmal. BGR reports AT&T has sold “fewer than 15,000 units nationwide through last week”—even after the company brought the price of the phone down from $99 to $0.99.

In comparison, the iPhone sold over 5 million units in the first weekend it debuted, according to the Christian Science Monitor.

According to a statement from an AT&T spokesperson the company does “pricing promotions all the time and have made no decisions on future plans.”

The source says AT&T sales reps are not huge fans of Facebook Home or the First and don’t make much of an effort to sell the phone to customers. The company is more focused on continuing sales of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the iPhones.

Many analysts have viewed the phone and found that, outside of its integration with the Facebook Home interface, it’s a pretty regular phone.

In addition Facebook Home, received terrible reviews when it was released onto Google Play. According to TheNextWeb.com, the app received an average of 2.3 starts only a few hours after it became available on Google’s home for apps.

There is no official statement from AT&T in regards to its intentions for the First, however its comment to BGR leaves room for an array of possibilities.
