Baltimore (6-7) won Game 1 against Tampa Bay, 7-1. The Orioles' offensive showing came as result of a team effort. Shortstop Ryan Flaherty leading the team with two RBIs, and Matt Wieters, Nelson Cruz, Chris Davis, J.J. Hardy and Steve Lombardozzi all chipped in with one RBI apiece.
"A lot of big two-out hits, a lot of big RBIs with guys on second," Wieters told the Associated Press after the game. "It wasn't really the long ball that did it, but we found a way to win."
On the pitching front, Wei-Yin Chen gave up only one run through his six innings pitched.
Orioles pitcher Miguel Gonzalez (0-1, 9.64 ERA) gets the start on Wednesday. After allowing seven runs in April 4's loss against Detroit, Gonzalez improved slightly in his April 8 start against the Yankees, who took him for only three earned runs. Though the Orioles won the game, Gonzalez didn't get the decision.
"First I was a little up, a couple of my pitches I couldn't finish," said Gonzalez, who gave up two solo homers against the Yankees. "Then toward the end, (Wieters) told me, 'Just be yourself and make your pitches and try not to do too much,' and the last two innings were great."
Gonzalez is scheduled to be opposed by Rays pitcher Jake Odorizzi (1-1, 5.73). The right-hander gave up seven runs in five innings in his April 9 loss against Kansas City.
Despite Odorizzi giving up 10 hits, Rays manager Joe Maddon came to his defense.
"I thought he was really throwing well. He didn't do anything wrong. He threw really well," Maddon said. "People who look at that line are going to misinterpret that outing."
