‘Fifty Shades of Grey' Movie Cast Rumors: Does Ian Somerhalder Split with Nina Dobrev Boost His Chances as Christian Grey?

Fan favorites of Ian Somerhalder as Christian Grey are breathing a little easier today. Sadly Somerhalder and his girlfriend of three years, Nina Dobrev have called it quits, but there may be a bright side to ending the romance.

Since casting rumors for "Fifty Shades of Grey" began, Somerhalder's name has been a strong candidate for leading male role. Fans thought The Vampires Diaries star would be great as the sexy, suave and confident Christian Grey. There was one issue however, his girlfriend.

According to Mstars, Somerhalder's split with costar Dobrev might actually be a good thing. Fans feared that Somerhalder could not actually play Grey because Dobrev would not like her boyfriend doing the hot-and-heavy sex scenes with any other woman. That also led to another problem for some fans. What if Dobrev insisted that the only way Somerhalder could play Grey was if she was cast as Anastasia Steele.

The website reports that fans were not crazy about the couple- who play lovers on the show "The Vampire Diaries"- acting together in another role. They feared it would take away from the movie.

Well, Mstars and many other media outlets are reporting that the split has just upped Somerhalder's chance at landing the coveted role.

Of course, none of this news is official but fans could sleep a little easier knowing Somerhalder is still in the running.

Somerhalder actually addressed the "Fifty Shades" rumor on Watch "What Happens Live" with Andy Cohen.

"I think they have a very big job ahead of them, casting this role," Somerhalder said. "So, I can't say anything other than, it's a very interesting story and whoever plays that role is going to have a lot of fun rehearsal time."

Cohen responded with "I think that means he's doing it, you guys."

It has also been rumored that author E.L James is a fan of Somerhalder as Grey when she retweeted a photo sent to her of the actor in a masquerade mask with a quote from the book.
