Rod Stewart was so distraught over a two-week split with his wife of 13 years, he wrote a song about it, the singer told Australia's Life Magazine.
While heartbreak-inspired songs are no secret in the world of singer-songwriters, Stewart's break-up was secret. The 68-year-old singer said he asked his wife, Penny Lancaster, 42, for a picture of her during their troubled time so he could see her when he woke up and when he went to sleep.
The song that ensued was a cover of Tom Wait's "Picture in a Frame" to be included on his upcoming album.
The two have since reconciled and while Lancaster is Stewart's third marriage, the singer admits to still having the same spark for her after 13 years.
"I have always loved women, won some, lost some, but it's not about the magic touch, it's about being a better person and a good listener," he told the Australian magazine.
Lancaster and Stewart have two children together. Stewart, who has eight children with five women, was previously married to model Rachel Hunter and Alana Stewart.
Stewart said his relationships have taught him how to be grounded.
"I met Penny in my 50s and if I had not learnt by that point in my life I was never going to," he told the magazine.
Stewart, one of the best-selling musical artists of all times, has sold more than 100 million records worldwide. His next album, "Time," is scheduled to be released this year.
