Verizon Upgrades 5G Network Ahead of Indy 500 to Support Massive Crowd Demand

Under ideal conditions, download speeds could reach as high as 2.5Gbps.

As anticipation builds for this year's Indy 500, mobile connectivity is becoming an increasingly important part of the race-day experience.

With hundreds of thousands of spectators expected to attend one of motorsport's biggest annual events, Verizon has completed a major expansion of its network infrastructure to prepare for the surge in mobile activity.

The company spent months upgrading its 5G systems around the venue, aiming to provide faster speeds and more reliable service for fans arriving throughout race weekend.

Massive Crowd Numbers Create Heavy Data Demand

Last year's Indy 500 attracted approximately 350,000 spectators, placing significant pressure on wireless networks across the venue.

During the race weekend, attendees reportedly used approximately 61TB of mobile data. Well, it just shows there's a growing importance of reliable connectivity at large live events.

To meet expected demand this year, Verizon upgraded radio equipment throughout the race facility and reported a 400% increase in available network bandwidth.

The expanded capacity is designed to minimize congestion and allow fans to browse social media, upload photos and videos, stream content, and access online services with fewer interruptions.

New Small-Cell Systems Improve Entry Experience

Digital ticketing has become a standard feature at major sporting events, creating additional challenges for network performance at entrance points where thousands of people connect simultaneously.

To address this issue, Verizon installed 33 dedicated small-cell systems around key entry locations near the venue's main gates. These systems are designed to manage heavy traffic loads as spectators access mobile tickets and event applications upon arrival.

The additional infrastructure aims to improve entry efficiency and reduce delays caused by network congestion.

Expanded Infrastructure Delivers Faster Speeds

Covering approximately 559 acres, the Indy 500 venue reaches broad and consistent wireless coverage across a vast area, GSMArena reports.

Verizon expanded its network footprint with 240 5G mmWave nodes, 219 high-capacity antennas, and upgraded nearby cellular towers with newer technologies.

Pre-event testing reportedly delivered download speeds exceeding 1Gbps, while ideal conditions reached speeds as high as 2.5Gbps.
