British couple David John and Rosaline Foster have died while on holiday in the Caribbean nation of Grenada.

Local police said that the 76-year-old man suffered a heart attack while at sea at Paradise Beach in Carriacou and was later pronounced dead at the scene. His 77-year-old wife attempted to save her but eventually became unconscious.

The Royal Grenada Police Force told the BBC that Rosaline was still taken to hospital but later died.

"The basic facts seem to suggest the man may have suffered a heart attack and the lady may have gone to his assistance, and she probably would have drowned," Royal Grenada Police Force Cpl. Ardell Lewis said.

Local media also reported that the retired couple was on holiday with other family members at the time.

The UK's Foreign Office did not immediately respond to reporters' requests for comment.

The death of the Fosters brought the total number of tourist fatalities in the country to four after American couple Ralph Hendry and Kathleen Brandel were allegedly murdered when their yacht was stolen.
