The family dog killed an infant in a horrible incident in a New Jersey home.

The Woodbridge Police Department says it happened around 6:15 a.m. on Saturday in the Avenel section of the township.

The family made a 911 distress call from the Mereline Ave. home, a quiet residential area of modest homes off of busy Rahway Ave.

The caller said the baby was unresponsive after being attacked by the family dog.

Police officers rushed to the home and found both the mother and baby who sustained serious injuries from the dog.

The baby died at the scene while the mother and father were transported to the hospital for treatment.

Police didn't release information about the breed of the dog or its fate.

The age of the baby and their name were not released.

Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone said the investigation is active and continuing.
