Nathan Wade, the special prosecutor hired by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis to lead the Georgia election interference case against Donald Trump, avoids testimony in an affair case by reaching a divorce settlement.

The prosecutor will not be required to testify this week about his alleged romantic relationship with Willis. The resolution of the matter between Wade and his wife, Joycelyn Wade, for now, leaves unanswered a question that has placed the district attorney's high-profile prosecution of the former president and more than a dozen aides at risk.

Special prosecutor Nathan Wade avoids testimony by reaching a divorce settlement as he, along with Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, face affair allegations.

Willis hired Wade in 2021 while he was a lawyer in private practice to help her run the Trump case, adding that she needed a trustworthy confidant for the job. However, three weeks ago, a filing from one of Trump's co-defendants, Michael Roman, claimed that the two were romantically involved. He also claimed that the two had taken vacations that were paid for by Wade.

Roman also said that the situation amounted to a conflict of interest and claimed that it was grounds for removing both prosecutors from the case. He also believes that the district attorney's entire office should go along with them, as per the New York Times.

Since the allegations surfaced, neither Wade nor Willis have confirmed nor denied the claims that they were in a romantic relationship. Recently, however, it seemed increasingly likely that the special prosecutor could be forced to address the claims at a divorce hearing on Wednesday where he was expected to take the stand.

But the hearing was hurried at the last minute and the judge on Tuesday afternoon announced a "temporary agreement." A spokeswoman for Wade's divorce lawyer, Andrea Dyer Hastings, said that the final details of the case are being worked out.

Now, Willis has until Friday to respond to Roman's filing against her and it remains unclear whether or not she will address the relationship allegations in her response. Despite the allegations, the former Trump campaign staff member's filing did not offer any evidence of the supposed romantic relationship between Wade and Willis.

Roman's claims also showed bank statements that appear to have shown the flights that were purchased for Wade and Willis to San Francisco and Miami. While the district attorney was previously subpoenaed in the divorce case, a judge temporarily paused her deposition until after Wade was questioned, according to The Hill.

With Wade avoiding testimony in the case on Wednesday, it is highly likely that the Fulton County district attorney will also not be required to speak. Judge Scott McAfee, who is overseeing the 2020 Georgia election interference case, ordered Willis to respond to Roman's allegations in writing by Friday.

On top of the affair allegations, Trump's lawyer in the Georgia case, Steve Sadow, accused the district attorney of violating the state's rules of professional conduct. He argued that she accused her critics of "playing the race card" in a fiery speech at an Atlanta church.

The rules in question state that the prosecutor in a criminal case shall "refrain from making extrajudicial comments that have a substantial likelihood of heightening public condemnation of the accused," said the Washington Post.
