ChatGPT was released back in 2022. When the AI chatbot became available to the public, it quickly made huge headlines because of its efficiency in answering queries and doing written tasks.

But, despite its popularity, many Americans are still hesitant to use this generative AI. Now, here's what the latest Pew survey revealed.

The Pew Research Center, an American think tank, released a new survey on Monday, Aug. 28.

Pew asked over 5,000 U.S. residents from July 17 to July 23 what they think about the OpenAI's popular chatbot.

Based on the survey's results, only 24% of the participants are using ChatGPT. When it comes to gender, men are likely the ones using the AI chatbot.

However, their percentage is still pretty low; 29% of males are using ChatGPT while only 19% of women are.

When it comes to age, less than 50% (exactly 41%) of U.S. residents under the age of 30 are using generative artificial intelligence.

This number becomes lower as the age of Americans increases; 30-49 years old (29%), 50-64 years old (19%), and over 65 years old (5%).

Aside from gender and age, the Pew Research Center also checked the percentage of students who are using ChatGPT. Here's what the American think tank discovered:
Only 15% of students in high school and lower levels are using ChatGPT.

  • 25% of college students are accessing the AI chatbot.
  • Only 31% of college graduates are using ChatGPT.
  • 33% of post-graduates are accessing ChatGPT.

Tech Crunch reported that Pew's survey showed that Americans who heard of ChatGPT believe that the AI chatbot will have major impacts on numerous jobs.

These include software engineers, journalists, as well as graphic designers. But, when it comes to their personal careers, only 19% of U.S. adults think that OpenAI's generative AI will have major impacts on their work.

Meanwhile, 27% of the survey's participants believe that the AI chatbot will have no effect on their personal work.

On the other hand, some Americans are quite optimistic since 15% of the respondents said that ChatGPT will actually be useful in their jobs.

Before Pew released its latest survey, the agency conducted a more recent polling analysis, which revealed that 47% of Americans are concerned about the role of AI in their daily lives.

This is a massive increase since a similar 2022 Pew survey only showed that Americans concerned about artificial intelligence are only 31%.
