Poland’s State Railway Network Was Hacked; Mishap Potentially Involves Russian Connection

By generating unauthorized emergency stop signals, saboteurs took advantage of this technology to paralyze train operations, disrupt travel, and sow havoc throughout the affected areas.

According to PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe, the manager of Poland's railway infrastructure, the original incident happened on Friday at 9:23 p.m. near Szczecin, where an unknown entity communicated unlawful signals through radiotelephone.

This disruptive behavior affected around 20 trains, which forced a precautionary suspension of freight traffic. The commotion was further exacerbated on Saturday at around six o'clock by an attack close to the Gdynia port.

A freight train was once more abruptly stopped by the unlawful signal. On Sunday, the sabotage persisted, this time relative to the Belarusian border, close to Bialystok.

The police and intelligence services in Poland immediately began investigations into these attacks with the goal of identifying the perpetrators and their motivations.

Senior security official Stanislaw Zaryn underscored the immense backdrop, noting that "attempts to destabilize the Polish state" have been ongoing for months and are frequently carried out with Belarus and the Russian Federation's cooperation, according to the Inquirer.
