Police in Hollywood, Florida, have arrested one person of interest connected to the mass shooting that happened Monday night. A second suspect remains at large.

Authorities alleged the incident happened as a result of an altercation between two groups along Hollywood's beachside walkway, which injured nine people, including a one-year-old child.

All nine injured people were transported to Memorial Regional Hospital and Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital for treatment.

Hollywood mayor to police: "Leave no stone unturned"

Hollywood Police Chief Chris O'Brien said the incident happened as thousands of people flocked to the area to make the most out of the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

"It's unfortunate we have law-abiding citizens who come to our beaches, and that gets interrupted by a group of criminals," he said.

Meanwhile, Hollywood mayor Josh Levy expressed gratitude towards "good samaritans" and emergency services who immediately responded to the incident but was also "deeply saddened and angered" by the shooting.

"The Hollywood Police Department will leave no stone unturned," he said. "We do not appreciate when people come into our city with guns and have an altercation in the midst of a public setting here."

Police urged the public to avoid the area where the shooting occurred as investigations continue.

Hollywood Police spokesperson Deanna Bettineschi also called on the public to come forward and assist authorities regarding anything related to the investigation or any property that might be inside the crime scene.

Hollywood is a popular beach destination located between Fort Lauderdale in the north and Miami in the south.
