Two boys were hospitalized after their school science project exploded in a Seattle home.
The blast was so powerful, it blew out several windows and pushed the backdoor open, according to ABC's local station KTRK.
The two boys, who were said to be cousins, sustained serious injuries from the explosion, including fragmentation wounds.
They will reportedly be in fine health soon, CNN reported.
Both of the boys were immediately transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment on Sunday.
One of their fathers told CNN that his son was building a model rocket of sorts for his science project, and the two were attempting to light a fire in the fireplace. Some of the fuel the boys were using to build the rocket might have ignited the explosions, according to detective for the Seattle Police Renee Witt, who spoke with CNN. After an initial sweep of the house, officials suspected the boys had used the fluid in attempts to get the fire going.
Several investigators who arrived on the scene this past weekend found makeshift bottle rockets with fireworks, a skyrocket and aerial display mortars, CNN reported.
"There was a supply of items to build many more, including assorted chemical powders for mixing up pyrotechnic powders," Witt stated. "The completed items were seized for destruction."
