Low-income people and households, senior persons, and the disabled get monthly payments through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. SNAP benefits in New York are distributed monthly via electronic benefit cards, as they are in other states.

Unless Congress grants a last-minute extension, those additional benefits will expire on April 15. According to Tina Postel, executive director of the Loaves and Fishes food pantry network in Charlotte, demand for food banks and pantries will undoubtedly increase as a result.

It comes as rising food and gas prices are already putting a burden on many food banks. Many goods, such as peanut butter and ground turkey, have grown much more costly and some senior volunteers on fixed incomes have had to reduce the number of food deliveries they can make due to rising gas prices, according to WFAE 90.7.

Meanwhile, Maine's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program provides low-income families and individuals with monthly payments. The Maine Department of Health and Human Services will give you a Maine Pine Tree Card, which is the state's equivalent of the Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, once you've been authorized for SNAP.

The Maine Pine Tree Card may be used to buy healthful food at authorized locations or anyplace the "Quest" logo appears, much like a credit or debit card. SNAP benefits can also be utilized for delivery or curbside pick-up purchases from Amazon, BJ's Wholesale Club, Hannaford to go, and Walmart. Walmart takes both SNAP and EBT cash benefits, but Amazon, BJ's, and Hannaford only accept SNAP.
