According to a new study, clenching your right hand can help you remember an action or event better ,clenching your left hand can help recall it easily later
Got that biology exam or spelling test coming up and you wish there was a way to boost your memory? Findings of a new study could have some good news for you. According to scientists, all you need to do is clench your right palm into a fist and this will automatically boost your memory. Reportedly, clenching your fist helps you remember an action or event better makes it easier to recall later.
For the study, participants were split into five different groups and each one of them was asked to memorize and then recall words from a list of 72 different words. The first group was asked to clench their right had before memorizing the list and then before recalling the list; while the second group was asked to clench their left hand on both occasions. The third group was asked to clench their right hand while memorizing the list and their left had while recalling the information on the list; while the fourth group was asked to clench their left hand while memorizing the list and their right hand while recalling it. The fifth group didn't clench any hand while remembering and recalling the list.
Researchers found that there was an evident improvement in memory power in the group that clenched their right hand while remembering and left hand while recalling the information on the list.
"The findings suggest that some simple body movements--by temporarily changing the way the brain functions--can improve memory," said Ruth Propper, the lead researcher of the study, in a news release. "Future research will examine whether hand clenching can also improve other forms of cognition, for example verbal or spatial abilities."
Researchers of the study clarified that further study needs to be conducted to see if this method is applicable on visual stimuli as well.
