The polar freeze has temporarily lifted for some Midwestern and northeastern United States residents, but weather officials are issuing warnings for another kind of wintry cold front this weekend - freezing rain.
Freezing drizzle has created icy roads and reduced visibility in Chicago, Baltimore, and the Harrisburg, Penn. area, including Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry and York counties, according to the Patriot-News.
According to a report by NBC Chicago, the Midwestern city - which has endured sub-zero temperatures and almost a week straight of snow - will see some light freezing rain Thursday afternoon, about a half-inch of snow, then more freezing drizzle. By Friday, weather officials anticipate temperatures to rise into the upper 30s, but rain will fall steadily into the evening. Light snowfall will persist over the weekend in Chicago.
Baltimore and D.C.-area residents should expect similar weather, with icy roads on Friday morning, snow and freezing rain leading into a milder weekend. The Baltimore Sun reported that temperatures should be in the mid-30s by Friday. Rain will continue over the weekend, with some unseasonably warm weather as high as the 60s on Saturday.
A freezing rain advisory has been issued around Harrisburg, Penn., the Patriot-News reported. Between the hours of 4 a.m. and 3 p.m. Friday, motorists are urged to take special precaution when driving over bridges and potentially slippery, icy roads.
