‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ Tops Holiday Movies

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is the top grossing movie for Christmas 2013.

Peter Jackson’s movie version of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug topped the Holiday Movies beating a handful of high-profile films including 47 Ronin of Keanu Reeves and The Wolf of Wall Street featuring Leonardo DiCaprio.

According to estimates of Rentrak.com, the second installment of J.R.R. Tolkien’s popular masterpiece The Hobbit 2 has collected $29.9 million in December 27-29, making it the top movie for this season. It now has cumulative revenue of $ 190.3 million.

According to USA Today, The Hobbit 2 became a favorite despite multiple choices due to its 3D special effects. However, it only received a 74 percent approval rating from RottenTomatoes.com with 86 percent of the audience saying they liked it.

Meanwhile, children and those who were young at hearts that don’t prefer watching The Hobbit 2 can see Frozen instead, which is still a favorite even after more than a month in movie houses.

The Walt Disney Picture computer-animated musical epic fantasy film has earned $28.8 million over the weekend, placing it in the second spot. Frozen has received a RottenTomatoes.com approval score higher than The Hobbit 2 at 89 percent score with 90 percent of the audience saying they liked it.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues of Will Ferrell earned $20.2 million, which placed it at the third spot, followed by American Hustle featuring Christian Bale with $19.6 million and The Wolf of Wall Street at the fifth spot with $18.9 million.

Among the new films, only DiCaprio’s film cracked the top five and analysts estimated Martin Scorsese’s movie to get $21 million. The movie was also the only picture among wide releases to get excellent ratings from the critics. The three-hour long film earned an approval rating of 76 percent from RottenTomatoes.com.
