Israel Attacks Two Hamas Training Camps After Israeli Man Shot On Gaza Strip

A Gaza sniper killed an Israeli civilian who was working on a security fence on the Gaza frontier after heightened tensions, according to Reuters.

In retaliation, Israel conducted two air strikes on two different Hamas, an Islamic group that controls Gaza, training camps and hospital officials have confirmed the death of a three-year-old child who lives near one of the camps, Reuters reported. The Israeli civilian is the first death on the Gaza frontier for over a year.

Officials in a Gaza hospital confirmed the three-year-old girl was killed during the air strike on the Bureij training camp, Reuters reported. She died while standing outside her home, which was near the camp, when the air strike occurred, injuring her two brothers who were also outside.

In a statement, Hamas condemned the girl's death as "a criminal and cowardly act," according to Reuters.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed in a statement that an aircraft, tanks and infantry had been part of an attack targetings "a weapon manufacturing facility and a terror infrastructure in the southern Gaza Strip, a terror site and another terror infrastructure in the central Gaza Strip and a concealed rocket launcher," Reuters reported.

The two recent Palestinian attacks consisted of a bus bombing by Tel Aviv on Sunday with no deaths, and a stabbing of an Israeli policeman who was stabbed on Monday, Reuters reported.

Hamas officials and witnesses on the scene said the Israeli planes bombed a training camp in Khan Younis and as-Bureij and tanks fired shells in the eastern section of Gaza city, Reuters reported.

Last year Egypt broke a ceasefire which turned into an eight-day blood shed between Israel and Hamas. A truce was entered into after the fighting ended, Reuters reported.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon asked both sides to continue to follow the 2012 truce and "exert maximum restraint to prevent another cycle of bloodshed," according to Reuters.

Ehab Al-Ghusain, Hamas Government spokesman, said in a statement the group was "making internal efforts to contain the situation" and had already contacted Egyptian mediators to prevent further bloodshed, Reuters reported.
