British rock singer, Ian Watkins, the former Lostprophets front man, was sentenced to 29 years in jail by a British judge on Sunday for the attempted rape of a baby and several other "incomprehensible" child sex offences.
Judge John Royce said Watkins had "plumbed new depths of depravity" in committing a string of sexual offenses against very young children, the Associated Press reported. Watkins, 36, had 13 charges against him for trying to rape a baby, sexually touching a 1-year-old, encouraging a fan to abuse her child and making child pornography. He pleaded guilty to all the charges last month.
According to the AP, Royce said Watkins was a manipulative and dangerous sexual predator who abused his fame to help satisfy his "insatiable lust."
"Those who have appeared in these courts over many years see a large number of horrific cases," Royce said in sentencing at Cardiff Crown Court. "This case, however, breaks new ground."
At the sentencing, a visibly shaken Watkins was ordered to serve at least two-thirds of his 29-year term, and then spend six more years on strict probation, the AP reported. Formed in 1997, Lostprophets announced it was disbanding after Watkins' arrest. In 2006, they had a chart-topping album with "Liberation Transmission".
"Ian Watkins was the ringleader of this terrible conspiracy and it is right that his sentence reflects this," the Crown Prosecution Service said in a statement after sentencing. "He is a highly dangerous and manipulative individual who preyed on his victims in a calculated manner."
Given Watkin's extensive touring schedule, police are investigating whether he had other victims elsewhere in the world. Detective Chief Inspector Peter Doyle said detectives were pursuing leads in Germany and the United States, the AP reported. Interpol, the German Federal Police and U.S. Homeland Security have been in touch with the police to further investigate Watkins.
Two female accomplices, described by prosecutors as "active participants in the most shocking abuse of their own children," were jailed for 15 and 16 years, respectively. Their identities have not been disclosed in order to protect the identities of their children, the AP reported.
