Apple's next iPhone 5S is slated to be released in June/July 2013 according to several reports and it might have a fingerprint technology, says Topeka Capital analyst Brian White.
KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo offered a thorough roadmap of his expectations for Apple product rollouts for the year and pegged the iPhone 5S as being released in June or July launch, with a version specific to China Mobile arriving a bit later in September.
In a report released Thursday, Kuo said: "Currently, market consensus for shipments of iPhone 5S, low-cost iPhone and iPad mini 2 is July, July, and August, respectively. But in light of publicly available information and our knowledge of technological trends, we now think all three products will begin shipments later than our previous expectation and market consensus."
Kuo did not offer a new specific target date for the launches of the updated models, instead laid out a series of three scenarios modeling how Apple's shipments could be affected based on August/September, September/October, and October/November timeframes.
Meanwhile, Topeka's Brian White says, "we believe fingerprint identification technology will be part of the iPhone 5S and this is likely to be the major new feature used to market the iPhone 5S, similar to what Siri was to the iPhone 4S."
This fingerprint technology might be possible as Apple acquired Authentec, which made a fingerprint scanning chip, last July. White also noted that there will be minor cosmetic changes: "the camera is expected to be larger and the left side buttons to be arranged a bit differently."
