The family former Marine Dayna Morales claims refused to tip her because she was gay has come forward claiming they are victims of a scam.
According to NBC 4 New York, the family who ate at the Gallop Asian Bistro in Bridgewater, New Jersey contacted them with evidence proving they tipped Morales. The family, who wanted to remain anonymous, provided their customer copy of the receipt.
The receipt had the same date, same time stamp and same $93.55 total, except with an $18 tip, bringing the total to $111.55. In attempts to further validate their claim, the couple provided a copy of their Visa statement where the New Jersey restaurant charged them for $111.55.
The couple believes their bill was used for the "hoax," and deny the handwriting belongs to either of them.
"We've never not left a tip when someone gave good service, and we would never leave a note like that," the wife told NBC New York.
"Never would a message like that come from us," the husband said.
NBC New York went to the restaurant to ask the manager why the couple was charged if they allegedly did not tip. The restaurant did not provide a comment, but told the media outlet they have started an internal investigation to look into the matter. Morales continues to wait tables at the restaurant.
Morales was shown the receipt and credit card statement by NBC New York, but kept to her story and claims it is not her handwriting on the note. As for calling Morales "Dan" and not "Dayna," the couple claims there was a miscommunication and believe they were told her name was Dan. Morales says she will be donating the extra tips people have sent her to The Wounded Warrior Project. (View Morales' original Facebook post here)
The couple has no plans on returning to Gallop Asian Bistro.
"There's enough hate and intolerance in the world that to create it when it wasn't there is shameful," the wife said.
