Angelina Jolie honored Pakistani schoolgirl activist, Malala Yousafzai, for her bravery and starting a charity foundation to support girls' education in Pakistan and around the world, according to the Guardian.
Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie presented a video featuring Malala Yousafzai at the Women in the World Conference in New York where she announced the first grant from the Malala Fund. The actress praised the young girl for her bravery and supporting girls' education despite all the difficulties she had to face.
"Here's what they accomplished," Jolie said of Malala's attackers. "They shot her point-blank range in the head - and made her stronger. The brutal attempt to silence her voice made it stronger."
Malala announced the first grant of the Malala Fund, which will support the education of 40 young girls in the Swat Valley, Pakistan. An unnamed organization in Pakistan will be receiving the first grant of $45,000, which will be used for the safety and education of those young girls and provide financial support to their families, according to the report.
"Announcing the first grant of the Malala Fund is the happiest moment in my life," Malala said. "I invite all of you to support the Malala Fund and let us turn the education of 40 girls into 40 million girls."
Jolie, a UN special envoy, pledged to donate $200,000 of her own money to the Malala Fund.
Malala survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban last October. She was shot in the head and spent hours being operated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. She recovered from her injury and started school again in March. Malala now attends a school in Birmingham.
The Malala Fund is managed by Malala and her family including some other trustees. It was established by the Vital Voices Global Partnership, founded by Hilary Clinton.
