Marvel is famous for expanding its cinematic universe through end-credits scenes. From the very first introduction of Agent Nick Fury at the end of the first Iron Man to the Thanos teaser at the end of The Avengers, Marvel likes to make it clear that its stories aren't done just because the credits have begun to roll. Its latest film "Thor: The Dark World" is no exception to that rule. But what did the teaser in "Thor 2" mean?
For those of you who haven't seen the film, you might not want to read any further as there are SPOILERS AHEAD.
The scene features Sif and Volstagg bringing the Aether to a new character called the Collector, played by Benicio del Toro. The reason the two Asgardians decided to hand the powerful force over to a third party? They feel that it is unwise to keep the Aether in close proximity to the Tesseract, the cosmic bad boy that caused so much trouble in "Captain America: The First Avenger" and "The Avengers," because two "Infinity Stones" don't belong in one place together.
The scene was directed by James Gunn, the man behind the upcoming "Guardians of the Galaxy" a film set several years in the future of the Avengers' universe. In the film, the Collector will be playing a major role as a villain. After the two Asgardians leave his sight he mentions that he has one stone down with five more to go.
Those familiar with Marvel comic-book lore likely know exactly what "Thor 2's" end credit scene was hinting at. For those uninitiated, it was another reference to the Infinity Gauntlet storyline in which Thanos manages to get a hold of all six powerful artifact's gems that, when combined, transform whoever possesses them into an omnipotent being, something Thanos eventually does.
According to W.I.R.E.D. the Infinity gems have been a part of Marvel lore since the 1972 Marvel Premiere #1, which introduced them under the, now very dated name, "Soul Gems."
We've already been told that Thanos will somehow play a major role in "Guardians of the Galaxy." Whether the purple faced cosmic villain will show up himself or will send an agent on his behalf to steal the Aether gem.
This is not the first time the Infinity Gauntlet storyline has made an appearance in the Marvel cinematic universe. The infinity gauntlet first appeared in Thor number one briefly in the background while the Frost Giants attack Asgard. You can see the Infinity Gauntlet in the brief clip below.
