The year 2015 was a sad one for celebrity relationships. Everyone from Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner to Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield called it quits before the New Year. Take a look back at some of the saddest and most shocking celebrity breakups of 2015.

Patrick Dempsey and Jillian Fink

The former star of "Grey's Anatomy" and his wife of 15 years filed for divorce in January 2015, which was just a few months before his character was killed off the show. Fink was the one who filed the paperwork, citing "irreconcilable differences," and requested both spousal and child support. They have three children together.

"It is with careful consideration and mutual respect that we have decided to end our marriage," the couple said in a statement at the time. "Our primary concern remains the well-being of our children, and we ask with profound gratitude that you respect our family's privacy at this very sensitive time."

Mandy Moore and Ryan Adams

Mandy Moore and singer-songwriter Ryan Adams announced their split in January after they had been together for nearly seven years. The 30-year-old singer cited "irreconcilable differences" and asked for spousal supports from Adams. The couple married in a private ceremony in March 2009.

"Ryan Adams and Mandy Moore have mutually decided to end their marriage of almost 6 years," the couple's reps said in a joint statement to Entertainment Tonight. "It is a respectful, amicable parting of ways. Both Ryan and Mandy ask that the media respect their privacy at this time."

Miley Cyrus and Patrick Schwarzenegger

The pop star and son of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver called it quits after six months. The two hit a serious rough patch after Schwarzenegger was seen getting a little too close to an ex-girlfriend while on spring break. The split was also apparently due to the fact that the two were "in different places in their lives."

Big Sean and Ariana Grande

Big Sean and Ariana Grande were eight months into their relationship when they decided to end things in April, according to Us Weekly.

"They both deeply care for each other and remain close friends," reps for Grande and Sean told Us in a statement. "We kindly ask that the media respect their wish for privacy regarding this personal matter at this time."

Evan Peters and Emma Roberts

The two "American Horror Story" co-stars called off their engagement in June 2015 after they reportedly "grew apart," according to a People source. "They both had a lot of growing to do and it was better that they do it on their own."

Roberts and Peters started dating in 2012, and Peters proposed during the holidays in New York City one year later.

Nick Jonas and Olivia Culpo

The pop star and the former Miss USA winner split up in June after dating for two years. The couple reportedly split because they were spending too much time apart.

"It's very tough and we had a beautiful two years together and [I have] nothing but love and respect for her," Jonas said of the split. "But it's always hard and my thing now is focusing on my work and staying as busy as I can, as creative as I can be."

Charlize Theron and Sean Penn

Charlize Theron and Sean Penn called off their engagement in June after almost two years of dating. The split came as a shock given their lovey-dovey appearance together at the Cannes Film Festival in the South of France in May.

The Oscar-winning actress spoke to Elle U.K. about her relationship with Penn just a month before their June 2015 split. "Putting aside that he's my partner, he's the love of my life; for the first time, I felt that my work was really bleeding into my life and that made it hard," Charlize said. "There were moments where I was incredibly unfair to him. And moments where I felt like... he was incredibly unfair to me."

Penn did not seem too sad about the breakup. Shortly after he and Theron ended things, the actor was spotted out on a romantic dinner date with Emmanuelle Vaugier on Aug. 4, according to Us Weekly.

Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck

After 10 years of marriage and three kids, Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck announced that they were divorcing on June 30. The two had one of the longest running relationships in Hollywood but sadly divorced just one day short of their 10-year wedding anniversary. In a joint statement, the two explained that while they were separating, they were still focused on their young children.

"After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce. We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time," their statement read. "This will be our only comment on this private, family matter. Thank you for understanding."

Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick

Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick were together since 2006 before they called it quits in early July. Kardashian had had enough after photos of Disick and his ex-girlfriend Chloe Bartoli surfaced of the two vacationing in Monte Carlo together. The two always had a rocky relationship in the past, but the pictures were the last straw for the "Keeping up with the Kardashians" star.

Disick and Kardashian were together on and off for nine years and had three children together, Mason 5, Penelope, 3, and Reign, seven months.

Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert

The world was shocked earlier this summer when country music's first couple announced their split. The surprise announcement came after four years of marriage. The couple first met in 2005 at CMT's 100 Greatest Duets Concert when Shelton was still married to his first wife, Kaynette Gern. He and Gern divorced the next year and he began dating Lambert shortly after. The couple married in 2011.

"This is not the future we envisioned," Lambert and Shelton said in a statement to the Associated Press. "And it is with heavy hearts that we move forward separately. We are real people, with real lives, with real families, friends and colleagues. Therefore, we kindly ask for privacy and compassion concerning this very personal matter."

The couple's divorced was finalized hours after the statement was released.

Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale

After 20 years together and 13 years of marriage, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale announced that they were getting a divorce. The two met all the way back in 1995 when their bands No Doubt and Bush toured together.

"While the two of us have come to the mutual decision that we will no longer be partners in marriage, we remain partners in parenthood and are committed to jointly raising our three sons in a happy and healthy environment," they said in a joint statement, according to Us Weekly. "To that end, we respectfully request privacy from the media during this time."

Zayn Malik and Perrie Edwards

After Zayn Malik left One Direction so he could concentrate on his personal life, the singer announced in August that he had split from his fiancée Perrie Edwards. The couple first met on the set of "The X-Factor" in 2011 and began dating shortly after Edwards' band Little Mix won the talent competition. The couple got engaged in 2013 despite the fact that they were constantly surrounded by cheating rumors.

Edwards was appearently "devastated" after the split, a source told People Magazine.

Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green

After more than a decade together, Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green decided to go their separate ways. The couple was together for 11 years, married for five and had two children together. The couple first split up in 2009 after Fox called off their three-year engagement. They soon worked things out and tied the knot in 2010 during a beach ceremony in Hawaii.

The split was amicable and the two were said to be seeking joint custody - physically and legally - of the couple's two sons, 2-year-old Noah and 18-month-old Bodhi. It was also reported that the couple did not sign a prenup.

"Megan and Brian have decided to separate," a source told People. "They will always love each other very much and are devoted to their kids. Anything could happen in the future, but for now they've decided it's best to take some time apart."

Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt

The "Mad Men" star and his actor/director girlfriend ended things in September after they spent almost two decades together. The longtime partners met in 1997 at a party that was hosted by a mutual friend.

"With great sadness, we have decided to separate, after 18 years of love and shared history," they said in a joint statement. "We will continue to be supportive of each other in every way possible moving forward."

Amy Poehler and Nick Kroll

Amy Poehler became a single lady once again after she split from fellow comedian Nick Kroll after two years together. The two could not seem to make things work in-between their busy work schedules. Kroll was the first man Poehler dated since she ended her nine-year relationship with "Arrested Development" actor Will Arnett in September 2013.

"They really tried, but it just wasn't realistic anymore," a source told Us Weekly of the spilt. "They were spending more time apart than together."

Kaley Cuoco and Ryan Sweeting

"The Big Bang Theory" star announced her divorce from her professional tennis player husband in September after only 21 months of marriage. The two tied the knot on Dec. 31, 2013 after they got engaged three months after they met each other.

Kaley Cuoco and Ryan Sweeting have mutually decided to end their marriage," the star's rep said at the time. "They ask for privacy at this time. No further statement will be issued regarding this matter."

Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez

After only being married for two years, Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez announced their divorce in October. The actress and the French actor have one child together, a 2-year-old son named Maceo.

"It is with a heavy heart that we have come to the decision to divorce," they announced in a joint statement. "We move forward with love and respect for one another and the shared focus for what is best for our son. We wish each other nothing but happiness in life, and we hope that you respect our, and most importantly our children's privacy, as we go through this difficult period."

Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield

Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield split for what seems to be the final time in October. The couple met on the set of "The Amazing Spider-Man" and dated off-and-on for four years. The two had taken a break from their relationship back in April and broke it off because "it just wasn't working."

Gigi Hadid and Joe Jonas

Gigi Hadid and Joe Jonas broke up in early November after dating for five months. The two were friends for years before they officially got together and hope to remain close.

"It was not a dramatic breakup," a source told ET. "They both were too busy and are working a lot the next few months. Before they dated, they were already good friends and they will definitely stay friendly. No bad blood there. It was amicable."

Courteney Cox and Johnny McDaid

The former "Friends" star and her fiancé Johnny McDaid began dating in late 2013. Cox and the Snow Patrol rocker ended their 17-month engagement in late November. The two had reportedly tried counseling, but it ultimately did not work.

Yolanda Foster and David Foster

"The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star Yolanda Foster and her music producer husband David Foster announced their split on Dec. 1 after four years of marriage. The couple were together for nine years.

"Sadly we have decided to go our separate ways. We've shared nine beautiful and joyous years together and during that time we experienced love, friendship, and the inevitable challenges that come with managing a marriage, careers, blended families and health issues," the couple said in a joint statement.

"We are grateful for the years we've spent together and believe wholeheartedly that we did our best. I hope that we can pave the road ahead of us with all we've learned and with the love and respect we will always have for one another."
