Blackberry launched an impressive number of applications just seven weeks after introducing its much-hyped Blackberry Z10 Smartphone, surpassing a six-figure milestone in total number of apps available through Blackberry World Storefront, according to the company's press release.
Blackberry Z10, first smartphone running on the latest Blackberry 10 platform, was launched in the U.S. March 22. Blackberry decided to add some top brand apps including Amazon Kindle, OpenTable and The Wall Street Journal for Z10 users befor its launch.
Blackberry is promising additional apps in the coming weeks to widen the range of apps catalog on offer for customers. According to the company, upcoming apps that will be available for download or purchase through Blackberry App will include, The Daily Show Headlines, Pageonce, PGA, eBay, eMusic, Maxim, , Rdio, Skype, CNN, Soundhound, MLB at Bat, MTV News and Viber.
Blackberry crossed more than 100,000 applications, which is a close competition to Microsoft Windows Phone with 150,000 apps. But Blackberry has a way to go when compared with Android, which offers more than 670,000 apps or Apple with more than 775,000 apps in total.
"The response to the BlackBerry 10 platform and applications has been outstanding. Customers are thrilled with the applications already available, and the catalog just keeps growing, now with more than 100,000 apps," Martyn Mallick, VP of Global Alliances at BlackBerry, said in a statement. "Top brands and application providers are joining us every day and are seeing the benefits of being early supporters of the new platform. We constantly hear from developers that the BlackBerry 10 tools are easy to build with and that we provide opportunities for app differentiation that they do not see on other platforms."
Blackberry said in its press release that it has included a wide range of leading applications and much hyped games in its catalogue giving users access to games like Angry Birds, Star Wars, Need for Speed, N.O.V.A. 3 and apps such as 8tracks, ATP World Tour Live, BBC Top Gear News, Bloomberg Anywhere, CBS Sports, Delta Air Lines, F1 2013 Timing App CP, Facebook, Foursquare, Jetpack Joyride, Keek, LinkedIn, Navita Translator, NHL GameCenter, The New York Times, PressReader, Slacker, Songza, Twitter, UFC, USA TODAY, Waze, WhatsApp and Zara.
Blackberry also notes how functioning of these apps stands apart from other platforms. It offers a pleasurable experience with these apps are included in the core OS integration points. Blackberry offers app share through its BBM, Facebook andTwitter and also to a wide range of themes, music and video content including favorite TV episodes.
Reports that draw a comparison between the Z10 and other newly launched smartphones conclude that though BlackBerry doesn't completely take the smartphone market by storm, it does a pretty decent job of posing as a tough competitor.
