The Philadelphia Eagles have fired head coach Chip Kelly after failing to make the postseason for the second straight year, according to the Eagles' team website.

"We appreciate all the contributions that Chip Kelly made and wish him every success going forward," said Chairman and CEO of the franchise Jeffrey Lurie, via the team's website.

Offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur will serve as the interim head coach for Philadelphia in Sunday's game against the New York Giants. The Eagles have also released Vice President of Player Personnel Ed Marynowitz. Lurie will address his decision in a press conference on Wednesday, Dec. 30 at noon.

Kelly led the Eagles to the playoffs in his first year, and posted a 10-6 record in each of his first two seasons in Philadelphia. The once coveted head coach struggled to find success with his team on the field this year managing just a 6-9 record. The offseason moves of trading LeSean McCoy, and acquiring DeMarco Murray have clearly negatively impacted the Eagles on the field this season, and it will be interesting to see what direction the Eagles ownership wants to take in their next head coaching search.

Kelly won't lack offers and some have speculated that he would land in Tennessee with former Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota. The Titans were reportedly not interested in Kelly because he was under contract, but now that he is available they may choose to target him, according to NFL reporter Ian Rapoport.

It's unclear if Kelly will want to go back to coaching at the college level, but their will likely be plenty of NFL franchises that will want to interview the former Eagles head coach.
