Coming off the news that it has produced a better-than-expected profits for the first quarter, Microsoft appears to be trying to get rid of the original Surface Pro tablets.
Microsoft has reduced the Windows 8 tablet price by another $100. The discount, only seems to apply to those who want to purchase the device that live in the United States or Canada. The first generation model now falls to $699 and is due to expire on Dec. 31. The Surface Pro price was previously cut by $100 in August, according to Mashable.
The massive price reduction has prompted many to believe that it is the company's way of selling off the remaining inventory and might very well stop selling the first-generation device altogether in 2014, as it is no longer listed on the firm's main Surface website.
To replace the Surface Pro would be the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2, which were each announced in New York last month. The Surface Pro 2 is now available starting at $899.
The company reported a first-quarter profit of $5.2 billion, or 62 cents per share, on revenue of $18.5 billion, according to USA Today. Both numbers are improvements from this time a year ago when Microsoft could only boast a $4.7 billion (53 cents per share) profit on revenue of $16 billion.
Microsoft's success in the tablet market means a lot considering it received negative jabs from Apple at it's most recent press event in San Francisco earlier this week where it unveiled updates to its own tablet lineup. Good numbers show the company is staying competitive with its rivals despite Apple's claims to the contrary.
