During Apple's live streaming event on Tuesday, the company unleashed their newest gadgets and updates filled with new features. At the center was the OS X Maverick operating system which will reduce Mac power usage, the Washington Post reported.
OS X Maverick will be free and available on any Mac from 2007 and on, Wired reported.
Apple Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi announced that "the days of spending hundreds of dollars to get more are over," Wired reported.
"We want to see the software used by as many Mac users as possible," he said. "So we've reengineered the development processes so [we] can put out regular releases that renew your Mac all the time -- upgrading your OS is as easy as downloading an app from the app store."
Some of the new features include the App Nap, which will reduce background apps activity when users are focusing on other programs and tasks, similar to the switching of apps on the iPhone, the Post reported. This will help the computer save energy with Apple claiming efficiency gains of 23 percent. Users will also be able to turn it off if they wish.
During the event, Federighi demonstrated added features to the calendar and map apps, where the calendar will show the locations of your appointment, as well as show weather information and estimated travel time. The new system will also have iCloud Keychain, which will allow all passwords to be synched across the users devices automatically, according to Wired.
Enhanced notifications, which means alerts will automatically pop-up regardless of what the user is doing and will allow users to reply without leaving the screen. It will work for social media and any other website alerts, Wired reported.
According to Wired, the web-based iWork app that was being beta tested on iCloud was also tweaked and now includes a new user interface for Pages, Numbers and Keynote, and collaborative tools have also been added so that numerous people can work on the same document at the same time. Garageband also received an added feature called Drummer, which is a software-based session drummer that will play along with other instruments.
